Hospice Savannah

Happy November! This month my show "Open Windows and Doors" will hang in the Hospice Savannah Art Gallery. The show will be on view starting November 2, 2010 to January 2, 2011. A percentage of the sales will benefit Hospice Savannah.

Craftsman Bungalow

This painting "Craftsman Bungalow" is now waiting to be on view at The Art House in Atlanta, GA. The imagery is a north to south view starting from our guest room. In true craftsman style, the bedrooms and bathrooms line-up along the west side of the house. We have amazing light that pours in from the windows along the west wall mid-afternoon. I am enjoying the angles created by the series of doors and the beams of light across the floor.

I have a "sister" piece that is still in progress in the studio and should be ready soon. This vantage point is looking south to north. The light source is 7am - 8am sunlight, which makes the color of the walls incredibly purple.

Driftwood

We went camping a couple weeks ago in South Carolina. A little further up the coast from our campsite were the most amazing driftwood formations. Huge! with really interesting negative spaces in the roots. It got me thinking about how these patterns would work in conjunction with the ironwork prints, either in layers or side by side.

I finished the preliminary drawing for my next linoleum block. This peice was done in graphite and watercolor on arches watercolor paper. All I need to do now is transfer the image to the block and cut away. I'm hoping to incorporate it with a pilasters block I worked with in the piece below. Should be a nice print.

Atlanta Printmakers Studio

A couple weekends ago I had the good fortune of being able to take a little R&R up in Atlanta, GA. I spent the weekend working at the Atlanta Printmakers Studio. I was able to make three aquatints that weekend. Below are two of my the test proofs. I'll be working on creating an edition this week.

SCAD Faculty Show

The SCAD Faculty Drawing Exhibition opens this Friday. The reception is going to take place on February the 12th from 6-9pm. I am showing one in a series of charcoal drawings of Ft. Pulaski on Hahnemuhle Copperplate paper.

Hallway Painting In Progress

This is an in progress shot of a Hallway painting I am currently working on. We have a series of doorways that connects the west side of our house. This view point is looking out of the guest room down the hall to our bedroom. I am really fond of how the chromium green and red oxide are interacting.

Studio Focus: Cast Ironwork

I've been exploring with cast ironwork patterns in my studio for almost a whole year now. I am still unsure about it, but I'm interested, so I keep going. I started these explorations with relief prints which were sourced from photos I had taken.

I've realized I need to work these patterns by hand and then make prints from those patterns. I have more control over the composition this way and I can also format the relief prints to make repeat patterns.

Until recently I hadn't explored these patterns with paint. I've been experimenting with color, layering, and creating these patterns freehand in oil on chalk gesso.

I've also been looking at the shadows of these ironwork patterns. I recently started to cut out the negative spaces in my prints, then I take these prints, project a light through them onto a dollhouse I have in my studio.

Ft. Pulaski

A couple weeks ago I went to Ft. Pulaski with my drawing students. The sun was perfect, strong, bold shadows cast on the architecture. The weather was beautiful 75 degrees and a light breeze. The students had a great time and made some really beautiful drawings. It is amazing what can happen to your drawings when you have a good subject. Below are my greatest hits from the weekend.

Whitfield Square

I just finished this print, entitled "Whitfield Square" a couple weeks ago. It is Collagraph Print on Rives BFK with Kitakata paper chine colle. This print inspired me to break down and finally purchase a mat cutter. A long overdue purchase.

A commission in progress. My friends Greg and Christine own a beautiful mid-century modern home in Ardsley Park, their home is the inspiration for this painting. 18" x 24" done in oil on chalk gessoed panel. I'm pleased with how it is coming along.

A trip to New Orleans this August offered up a nice amount of reference material. I enjoy this photograph for it's merger of the hard edge, light, and ironwork in the foreground. I'm on the cusp of figuring out how to incorporate the iron work into my paintings.

Ironwork Canopy

I've been working on this linoleum plate for a while now. I was finally able to run off an edition of 4 of this piece a couple weeks ago. I printed it on a creme colored Kitakata Paper. It is a reductive print from the same block.

It is now time to use some of the reference shots I've been collecting in the last several weeks to explore a different iron work pattern. I'm thinking I'll look at this one next.

I know the ironwork compliments the interiors I've been working with but I haven't figured out how yet. I think it will make more sense the more time I have to look at these shapes/patterns through drawing.

I'm working on an edition of relief prints for the PrintZero exchange. This is the first layer. I'm printing on lightweight Rives BFK paper with a linoleum block. I've been experimenting with a digital print overlay.

I've made some changes to the self portrait I started in January. At this point I want to focus on the cups in the foreground and pushing the room back a little further. The space isn't quite doing what I had in mind, but it is almost there.

Reductive Linocut

Here is one of the linoleum prints I worked on this weekend. The composition is the same as an egg tempera painting I've had "in progress" for some time. My hope is that this straightforward approach will shed new light on how I should proceed with the painting.

In Progress - Hallway

Here is an "in progress" shot of the painting I've been working on of the hallway in our house.

I've been enjoying all of the opportunities for values and slight changes in temperature to "butt" up next to each other. For example, the edge of the bathroom door against the the front door. Its been a struggle to get the hue and value of all of these blocks of "white" just right to depict that space.

There is a dim yellow light in the bathroom on the left, that reflects against the open door. In addition there is natural light that streams through blinds in the bathroom, creating cool light and a pattern against the door. The combination of natural light, artificial light and the pattern of the blinds makes for an interesting surface, and something I would like to explore a little more as I continue this painting.

It's been an off and on grey day, so the temperature of the light has shifted since when I first began working on this painting. The red and orange in the foreground might be a little too intense but I'm attracted to how they "pop" against the cool, dull hue in the portion of the hallway furthest from us. I plan to glaze a more neutral shade over the red and delineate the orange shape on the bottom right. This should help break up the overall intensity of those areas but still allow the space to breathe.

Old Victorian

This is one in a series of 3 watercolors I've done from the house across the street from my house. It has a wrap around porch on both the first and second floor. I'm struggling with the color, but have been finding the shapes and repetition endlessly interesting.

I envision it was a boarding house at one time. The only light I've ever seen on is in the kitchen, which seems like a tragedy. It should be bustling with visitors, strangers lounging in rocking chairs in the evening sun.

Sunday Sketchcrawl

I spent the day sketching around Savannah a couple weeks ago. Due to the copious amount of parks downtown, there are a lot of pleasant places to sit and draw beautiful things. This drawing was drawn in Madison Square. I think I'll use some of these sketches as starts to a series of monoprints.

New Years Day

I started this today painting today from the mirror above the mantel in my studio.

I've been thinking about making a portrait like this since I moved into my apartment in September. I'm going to see if I can incorporate some items on the mantel piece, so that there will be more of a spatial conversation between three different types of motifs (still life on the mantel, self portrait, and the environment surrounding me).

I'm not totally sure if I like where I am located in the composition. Again, inclusion of a more prominent foreground might help.
